Last Tuesday, the smoke detector in the break room started chirping. Not the full alarm—just one polite, persistent beep every minute or so. It is that sound that makes everyone look up from lunch and ask, "Is that the smoke detector?" I said I'd handle it. Then I spent the rest of the afternoon realizing how much I still didn't know about the things that are supposed to keep us safe.

What smoke detectors are actually telling you

Gas monitors are a different animal

What Ignoring a Chirp Actually Costs

What I Do Now

During our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I applied the same four questions to every existing supplier. We cut our list from 11 vendors to 6. More importantly, we reduced the number of 'I don't know' answers we got from our vendors. The ones who could answer went on the list. The ones who could not were exactly the ones who had caused problems before.

Even after choosing replacement detectors for our building, I kept second-guessing. What if the cheaper model was not reliable? The five days until delivery were stressful. It worked out, but the stress made me realize I needed a process, not a one-time fix.

So if your smoke detector is beeping, take it seriously. Do not just replace the battery. Ask yourself what it is really saying. If you cannot answer that, ask someone who can. And when the new one goes in, you're gonna want to write the date on the back. It is not a chore. It is a save.
