Compare safety equipment on total cost of ownership — not unit price. The cheapest quote is almost always the most expensive purchase. There are genuine cases where unit price is correct. Consumables with identical, verified specs from two approved suppliers? Take the cheaper one. Items where failure is harmless — a non-critical signage clip, a disposable liner, a spare wrist strap — are fine on unit price, because the downside is measured in dollars, not injuries. And once you've validated a spec through a sample order, paying a premium for the exact same item is just paying for a feeling.
The rule I actually operate on: pay the premium when failure is expensive, dangerous, or invisible. Buy on price when failure is cheap, obvious, and immediate.
Two honest caveats. First, I've never fully understood why some vendors beat their quoted lead times while others consistently miss — my best guess is internal buffer discipline, but I can't prove it, so I keep it out of the spreadsheet.
