Common mistakes I see on rush orders
I've spent five years coordinating emergency safety equipment orders for facilities that don't have time for a second mistake. OSHA's confined space standard (29 CFR 1910.146) requires atmospheric testing with calibrated instruments. That means a gas detector with an expired sensor or no calibration certificate is a doorstop, not a solution. When I'm triaging a rush order, this is the first thing I verify.
In March 2024, a client called 36 hours before a third-party audit because their gas detector wouldn't zero. They had the unit, but no calibration gas and no record of its last bump test. We found a calibration gas cylinder, paid for overnight freight, and delivered in time. The alternative was a $50,000 penalty clause. When I say industrial and scientific supplies, I mean gas detectors, calibration gas, hard hats, safety glasses, welding gloves, rubber boots, fire extinguisher accessories, and the documentation that goes with them. A product is only as useful as its lot number, expiration date, and compatibility.

9. Know your own boundary
This checklist works for us because we're a mid-size B2B supplier with predictable ordering patterns. If you're a seasonal business with demand spikes, or an international operation dealing with customs delays, the calculus might be different. For high-security vehicle barriers or gas detection in a classified area, we refer out. That's not a lost sale; that's good judgment.
